Over 15 years ago I had decided to build our own home. It was the mid 90s and the internet was in its infancy. Back then I knew I wanted to become self sufficient and “live off the grid”. I was determined to make less of an impact on the planet.
The “Greenhouse Effect” was a major driving force behind my motivation. The alternative energy options on the market were either expensive solar panels or complicated wind turbines. We decided to go with both. First I put up a few solar panels. Then I purchased and installed a wind generator. We did all of the installation work ourselves. The installation process seemed straightforward. But this was not the first time we ever took on a weekend project.
You could only imagine the number of questions we got from our friends. Everyone wanted to know how much we were saving. When we would told them . . . they couldn’t believe it. Business took off.
I was getting calls night and day from others who wanted to install solar panels or wind turbines.I couldn’t believe there was such a request.They main draw back was the upfront investment.
To create electricity for a normal family the average upfront cost was around $10,000. Most people just didn’t have that kind of cash laying around.
The most expensive to install was the wind generator. It could set you back anywhere from $4,000-6,000 depending on how much energy you needed to produce.
Yeah, you would eventually get your investment back by eliminating your electrical bill but it would take about 10 years. So you had to be committed to Green Energy. Then one day we received . . .
Well I had just signed the UPS shipping label for the latest wind generator I had ordered. I think it might have been a Tuesday.
After thinking about if for a while, my curiosity got the best of me so I decided to take a look at the new turbine. When I opened the box I realized it was un-assembled. Up until now, units came pre-assembled from the factory.
I had to know more. I jerked out the manuals, running down the parts list to make sure everything was in the box. Trust me there is nothing worse than being on the roof of a customers roof only to discover you are missing a bolt or a part.
Phew. The illustrated guide made the wind generator a cake walk to build. Heck I bet even my mother-in-law could put one of these together. They are that simple.
It wasn’t until a few days later when it really started to sink in. . I had just came across the mother-lode waiting for me to claim.

But we didn’t want to make and sell these generators. Don’t get me wrong we could have wrote our own price tag and people would have gladly paid us. We didn’t have the time and to be honest we had no interest in selling them.
We would build one of these wind generator machines and document the entire process. It would be just like one of those “For Dummies” or Idiot’s Guide” books.
The first set of challenges we ran into when putting pen to paper was . . it HAD to be ridiculously simple. We wanted a 5 year old with a screwdriver and set of pliers to be able to assemble one.
